Miniature Highland Cows: What to Know Before You Buy

Miniature Highland cows are charming. Before you buy one, learn what they are and what they need.

What is a Highland cow?

Highland cattle are a hardy Scottish breed from the Scottish Highlands and the Western Islands. They have a double coat: a long, oily outer layer over a soft undercoat, the longest coat of any cattle breed. Both sexes have long, wide horns. Reddish brown is the most common color, followed by yellow, with silver, black and brindle or dun also seen.

  • Up to 20 yrsLonger than most other cattle breeds.
  • 35 to 42 inTypical height of standard Highland cows (90 to 106 cm).
  • Cold hardyAlmost as cold tolerant as arctic caribou, but less tolerant of heat.

What does "miniature" mean?

Standard Highland cows are typically 90 to 106 cm (35 to 42 inches) tall, and bulls are taller. Miniature Highlands are smaller, but size varies by animal and bloodline. When you consider an animal, ask for its age, its parents and its measured height, and ask what size it is likely to reach.

What they need

  • Fencing: strong fencing designed for cattle.
  • Food and water: pasture, hay and clean water daily.
  • Shade in summer: the thick coat holds heat.
  • Hoof and vet care: arrange a large-animal veterinarian before you buy.
  • Company: cattle are herd animals. Highland herds have a clear dominance order that reduces aggression. Plan for companions.

Questions to ask the seller

  1. How old is the animal?
  2. What are its parents' sizes?
  3. How does it behave with people and other animals?
  4. Has it had veterinary care and what is its health history?
  5. Can I meet it first?
