Ponies for children and the farm

Small, sturdy and friendly. Meet the pony, see how it behaves and ask your questions.

Choosing a pony

A good pony match depends on the rider's size, age and experience. A calm, well-handled pony helps a young rider build confidence. A pony that is too much for the rider can put them off riding. We tell you honestly which ponies fit.

Questions worth asking

  • See the animal in person, more than once if you can.
  • Ask for the age, training, health history and how it behaves with new people.
  • Ask what feed it eats and how much. Most horses should eat about 2 percent of their body weight in hay each day.
  • Have your own veterinarian do a pre-purchase exam. It is not a pass or fail test. It gives you information to decide.
  • Plan for safe fencing, shelter, water and regular hoof care.

Good to know

  • Ponies are herd animals. They usually do better with company.
  • Ponies need safe fencing, shelter, water and good forage.
  • Children should ride with adult supervision and a properly fitted helmet.
Meet before you decide

Come see the pony in person, watch it with children and ask how it behaves. A calm, correct match matters more than a quick sale.

Questions

Good questions, plain answers

Are ponies good for children?

Many are, but each pony is different. Tell us the child's age, size and experience and we will tell you which pony fits.

What is the difference between a pony and a horse?

Ponies are small horses with sturdy builds. Size alone does not make a pony easy or hard to ride, so temperament and training matter most.

Can a pony live alone?

Horses and ponies are herd animals and do best with company. Plan for a companion animal.

What does a pony cost to keep?

Costs depend on your area and the pony. Plan for feed, hoof care, veterinary care and shelter.
